CANADIAN GROUP OF LIBERAL INTERNATIONAL

Liberalism is under attack in many parts of the world. Authoritarianism and toxic forms of populism are on the rise. Our system of liberal democracy needs a boost. It’s time for liberals and democratic progressives to unite in common cause. Liberal International (LI) is an organization designed for that purpose. It was formed in 1947 in Europe arising from the ashes of World War 2, determined to advocate for human rights and other liberal values as we know them in Canada. Those values are imbedded in the Oxford Manifesto of 1947 and updated in the Andorra Manifesto of 2017.

The Liberal Party of Canada (LPC) was a founding member but has become inactive in the past few years. To fill that void, we have formed the Canadian Group of Liberal International which was recently admitted to full membership in LI. We hope that LPC, perhaps the most successful party for liberalism in the world, will again become active in LI and that both Canadian organizations will work with other likeminded liberals in a multi-lateral effort to advance our common values. It has been said that the world needs more Canada. In that spirit, we say that Liberal International needs more Canadian participation.
